“Librarian’s Shelf” by Sally Hansen

Annual Library Foundation Book Sale

In anticipation of the annual book sale sponsored by the Columbus Library Foundation, the library staff has been taking book donations and weeding our inventory for the past year. The level of excitement is reaching a fevered pitch. We’re always concerned that we won’t get everything done in time. It’s a very important event---raising money to purchase new books, audio tapes, videos, DVD’s, magazine subscriptions, etc., --- and we take our book sale very seriously!

I predict that 2004 will be our best year yet. To clarify that prediction, I’ll let you in on a little secret: THE SELECTION OF TITLES HAS NEVER BEEN BETTER! To the patrons and friends of the Library who have so generously donated their treasured collections of books, videos, and audio cassettes I can only say a resounding “THANK YOU!” I know the attendees of the book sale will be pleasantly surprised. We intend to accept donations right up to Friday, August 6th. This is your chance to go through your own book collections and “weed”. That old adage: “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure”--- certainly applies in this instance.

As in the past, we will have special interests identified with large signs--- (Cookbooks, Travel, Self Help, Children, Young Adult, Video, Large Print, just to name a few). Personally, I seek out the travel and craft books, (although, I neither travel nor get a chance to make any craft items.) I think I must live vicariously through my armchair reading---but, isn’t that half the fun? With such a wide range of topics, I’m sure you won’t have any trouble finding something that appeals to your own favorite genre.

Columbus Public Library has benefited from one generous patron. Several years ago, George Kern donated hundreds of books on history and warfare. The Library was able to incorporate many of the books into its collection. The remaining books—several hundred-- not added to the Library’s shelves will be on sale this year. Some of the titles are classic, such as: “Abraham Lincoln: the Prairie Years and the War Years” by Carl Sandburg; “Battle-the Story of the Bulge” by John Toland. It’s an hour-by-hour reconstruction of the most dramatic and controversial battle of World War II. Another favorite---“Ernie’s War: the Best of Ernie Pyle’s World War II Dispatches” edited with a biographical essay by David Nichols. This special collection of books will be worth your while to peruse if you are a history buff or if you know of someone who would like a beautiful book on history or warfare.

Please mark your calendar for Sunday, August 8th thru Sunday, August 15th. Book Sale Hours will follow the Library schedule. On the first day, Sunday August 8th, starting at 1:30 PM, we will be charging $5.00 for each person who enters the book sale room. You will be able to redeem your $5.00 donation in books! Please support Columbus Library Foundation by attending the annual book sale---“there’s something for everyone.”

Columbus Public Library will be hosting “New York Times” best-selling author, Alex Kava. Her latest mystery, “One False Move”, will be on sale and a percentage of the proceeds from that day will go to the Library Foundation. Please join us for cookies and punch and a chance to visit with a local author on Sunday, August 15th from 2pm to 4pm.
