 Summer Reading Ideas

READ! READ! READ! With Columbus Public Library’s summer program in full swing, it seems like every child in the community is reading. But every once in a while, parents tell me that their children have read all of the books in a specific series. They are looking for suggestions on what their child would enjoy reading next. Though most recommendations depend on the child’s reading level and interests, I do have a few suggestions that are guaranteed to keep children reading!

One of the most popular series that young readers like is “The Magic Tree House” series. This collection incorporates a wide range of topics and interests and is perfect for individuals reading at the third grade level and up. With titles like “Winter of the Ice Wizard,” “Earthquake in the Early Morning,” “Twister on Tuesday,” “Dingoes at Dinnertime,” “Tigers at Twilight,” “Ghost Town at Sundown,” “Dolphins at Daybreak,” “Night of the Ninjas,” “Pirates Past Noon,” and “Dinosaurs Before Dark,” both boys and girls are sure to find a title that will appeal to them. Also with this series, it is interesting to keep in mind that each fiction text has a non-fiction companion. So if a child who reads “Twisters on Tuesday” would like to learn more about tornadoes, all he or she would have to do is find the appropriate corresponding book.

Another great series for both boys and girls is “The Series of Unfortunate Events” by Lemony Snicket. This collection is about the adventures of three siblings whose guardian tries to steal their inheritance. The children must depend on each other and their wits to outsmart their evil kin. This series is ideal for children reading at the fourth-grade level and up. The Columbus Public Library also has the movie, starring Jim Carrey, and the audio format. Children can read or listen to the unabridged version and compare it to the movie, allowing for great discussion between parents and children.

Choosing books for boys can be one of the hardest tasks a librarian has to face because many boys fall in the “reluctant reader” category. However, books by writer Matt Christopher seem to tempt the male palate for one simple reason---they focus on sports! Christopher does an excellent job capturing the team experience. His books cover a wide variety of sport from hockey to soccer.
Recommending books for girls is slightly easier because a number of fantastic series that are available for young ladies, for example “The American Girl” series, the “Dear America” series, and the “Junie B. Jones” series.

So the next time your child says that he or she is looking for a series that would entertain them, make a b-line to the Columbus Public Library. We have a wonderful selection of books that are ideal for young readers. If you have any questions regarding selections your child would enjoy, feel free to contact me at 564-7116 opt. 4.
