“Librarian’s Shelf” by Sally Hansen |
The City’s Sesquicentennial events are over. All of the
Columbus Days activities have come and gone. The Annual Quilt
Show was attended by thousands. The Columbus Public Library’s
Annual Book Sale took place during all of the amazing,
inspiring, stupendous happenings listed above. Needless to say,
with all the commotion our Book Sale was quite overshadowed. To
rectify that situation, the Library has decided to have a second
Sale.
Columbus Public Library’s Annual Book Sale II /2006 will be held
Thursday August 24 through Sunday August 27, 2006.
Traditionally, that has been our time slot. Personally, I feel
our regular “customers” will get a chance to shop and any new
potential buyers will have the opportunity to mark it on their
calendar.
We have been receiving loads of donated books. It just amazes me
the generosity of the Columbus people. There are all genres
represented: business, psychology, cookbook, science, nature,
biographies. I bet we have something for sale on just about any
topic you care about.
Don’t forget our Fiction! Science fiction, mystery, suspense,
thriller, horror, and romance---we’ve got it all! Of course I’m
partial to that genre. But, I would be remiss if I didn’t point
out some wonderful “finds” in my favorite area.
Ward Just, considered to be “one of the most astute writers of
American fiction” by “New York Times Book Review” has written
another masterpiece. “Echo House” is an epic chronicle of three
generations of Washington power brokers and the womenfolk who
loved them (except when they didn’t). The Washington Post
describes it as “a fascinating if ultimately painful fairy tale,
complete with a family curse. The decline of the Behls
represents the decline of Washington from the bright dawn of the
American century into the gathering shadows of an alien new
millennium.”
“Echo House” was a National Book Award finalist and “it will be
read in a century’s time by anyone seeking to understand how we
lived.” –Detroit Free Press.
The author, Ward Just, lives on Martha’s Vineyard,
Massachusetts. Since his early years as a noted war
correspondent, he has published eleven novels and several
volumes of shorter fiction. You can purchase this wonderful read
for just 50 cents.
Another discovery in the Book Sale Room is a book entitled
“Sunburn: a Thriller”. Enter the wild and wonderful world of
Laurence Shames’s Key West novels---and discover the hottest
crime fiction to emerge from the Sunshine State. A wonderful mix
of savory characters all work together to keep the plot running
at full throttle, and make “Sunburn” Laurence Shames’s sharpest,
funniest, most engaging novel yet.
Prue Leith is one of England’s top chefs, and her expertise
shines through in her insider’s details of the restaurant
business and the breathtaking food of India. In “Leaving
Patrick”, Leith has created a well-written, poignant, and moving
story with wry humor and intelligence about the real choices
that adults have to make once they start taking stock of their
lives. The protagonist is Jane, a high-powered London attorney,
who doesn’t have time for her marriage. Patrick is a struggling
restaurateur who wishes his wife, Jane, would stay home more
often and enjoy the pleasures of domesticity with him. They
drift apart, and one day Jane leaves Patrick. She wants more
from her relationship than friendship, and so at age thirty-six,
she sets off on a journey to find what it takes to complete her
life.
However, she discovers that what she thought she wanted doesn’t
make her happy. Bit by bit, she dismantles the life she has left
Patrick for. As both their lives spiral toward disaster, Patrick
and Jane come to reassess the decisions they’ve made. Has Jane
thrown away true love with both hands??
Please come to Columbus Public Library Annual Book Sale II. Our
selection is great, and you’re sure to walk away with some
wonderful treasures.
Don’t forget the dates and times.
