“Librarian’s Shelf” by Sally Hansen

“Stories Abound at Columbus Annual Book Sale”

The annual book sale will soon be upon us.  It’s such an exciting time at the library right now.  Donations of books have been quite steady.  Connie Korte has been so busy pricing and shelving all of the generous offerings from our patrons.  I don’t know what the Columbus Public Library would do if we didn’t have her organizational skills.  Truthfully, I’ve been daunted at times, but never Connie!!!  She just jumps right in—pricing and shelving, pricing and shelving---you, get the picture!

The book sale is scheduled for Aug. 14 through Aug. 24.  As in the past, the first night will start at 6; m.  ONLY that night (August 14th) will there be a $5 entrance fee that will be deducted from your purchases.  If for some reason, you don’t spend the entire $5.00, then we just consider it a donation to the book sale.

But I guarantee you’ll find dozens of worthy titles to add to your own collection Something to keep in mind also, the book sale hopefully brings in enough money to help purchase more books for the library.

The layout is similar to a bookstore AND a library.  We try to group the books by category, much like a bookstore but still use the Dewey Decimal System.  For instance, encyclopedias, almanacs, and the like would be in the 100’s.  Automotive repair manuals would be in the 600’s.  We’ll have a cheat sheet for those of us not up to snuff on our Dewey categories.

But, .just browsing the shelves sometimes produces real treasures that you might not have spotted if you were intent on just looking in certain areas.

Please allow yourself enough time to peruse.  We’re very fortunate this year, Mr. Trautwein, our Director, has contributed a lot of non-fiction to the Book Sale.

Whatever your interest, I’m sure you’ll be able to find dozens of titles that appeal to you.

The children’s books will be divided into five areas: young adult (12 years and up); juvenile fiction (8-12 years old); easy readers (5-0 years old---just learning how to read to beginning chapter books); non-fiction (everything from science to biographies).  As you can see, we have an excellent selection.

Of course, our fiction titles are phenomenal!  Through the generous donations of thoughtful patrons and the time honored tradition of ‘weeding” our collection we have something for everyone.  Whether it’s a mystery or a gentle romance, a thriller from the likes of Clive Cussler or a fantasy from Brian Jacques, we’ve got it all!

Mark your calendar right now—you wouldn’t want to miss this annual event (plus the opportunity to add some very fine books to your own library!)

The sale is August 14 through Sunday, August 24th.  I’m looking forward to seeing lots of my old friends and meeting a lot of new ones.  See you at the Columbus Annual Book Sale.
