A “Novel” Idea for Summer Fun
With Columbus Public Library’s summer program underway, children in
the community are enthusiastic about reading. It’s a remarkable
sight seeing them leave the library with an open-book in hand. One
would like to think that these dedicated souls are reading for the
pure joy of broadening their imaginations; however, that may not be
the case for all. Some of my reading buddies read because they want
to see me peck a pig, which is part of this year’s Summer Reading
Challenge goal of reading 160,000 pages. With a number of children
going “hog wild” for books, I do have a “bunny” suggestion
guaranteed to keep their interests going!
The book I would like to endorse is entitled The miraculous journey
of Edward Tulane. It’s by the extraordinarily talented Kate
Dicamillo, the very same author who brought readers face-to-face
with a brave little mouse in The tale of Despereaux and inspired us
with an unusual dog just looking for a “forever home” in Because of
Winn-Dixie.
In her latest tale, Dicamillo introduces readers to Edward Tulane, a
blue-eyed three-foot tall porcelain rabbit, living a comfortable
life on Egypt Street. He is a novelty toy who holds himself in high
regard because not only is he an expensive plaything with ears made
of real rabbit skin, he is also owned by a ten year old girl named
Abilene, who treats him with the utmost care and adoration.
Needless to say, life is quite good for Edward. He has a mistress
who adored him almost as much as Edward adores himself. He has a
wardrobe consisting of handmade silk suits, shoes made of the finest
leather, and numerous hats that easily fit over his exceptional
ears. Edward also has a solid gold pocket watch, which he often
refers to while waiting for Abilene to return from school.
However Edward’s life takes a dramatic turn when one day, he becomes
lost. From that point on, Edward is no longer surrounded by the many
comforts to which he has grown accustom. He’s no longer dressed in
his lavish outfits. The fancy shoes that hugged his dainty feet and
the hats that often christened his porcelain head soon became things
of the past. The precious time piece that once kept Edward company,
in Abilene absence, has been tragically stripped away. And as for
Abilene, Edward soon comes to realize that he may never see her
tender face again.
But don’t lose heart because, as with all of Kate Dicamillo’s books,
this too has a triumphant ending. Though Edward’s life seems to have
taken a turn for the worse, he does learn many valuable lessons.
Lessons that, with each set of loving hands he passes from, make him
a better companion in the end.
