“Librarian’s Shelf” by   Brad Hruska

"Story Times @ the Public Library"

As the parents of a young child, my wife and I are constantly looking for events and activities suitable for our son, Brennan. These programs must be fun and spirited in order to keep his attention.

Story Time at the Columbus Public Library is one of the many events to which my wife, Mary, will take Brennan. Story Time is perfect for small children for a number of reasons: It is a wonderful way for them to socialize with peers. In addition, parents have an opportunity to converse with other people their own age.

The Columbus Public Library offers two Story Times: Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. and Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. The primary goal of this program is to excite children about reading and encourage a life-long love of books. Each theme-based session focuses on a specific topic, such as dinosaurs or the zoo and is generally geared for children ages three and up. Parents are encouraged to remain with their children during the program, so that both can share in the literary experience.

Story Time incorporates a half hour of stories with an hour of creative arts/learning activity time. Learning activities are an ideal way for parents to help their children fine-tune skills such as color recognition and shape identification.

Every session begins with the song “If you love the library and you know it…” This lively activity gets children enthused about being at the library. It also helps them release built-up energy before reading begins. Story Time is also a fun way of familiarizing children with the library and its functions. They will meet a number of friendly staff that can aid them in finding books to read.

To encourage your children or grandchildren’s interest in coming to the library, I recommend the following titles: “Book! Book! Book!” by Deborah Bruss, “I Took My Frog to the Library” by Eric Kimmel and “ Beverly Billingsly Borrows a Book” by Alexander Stadler. These books not only spark children’s interest in the library but also make great read alouds!

So the next time you wonder what activities are available for the youngster in the family, make the Columbus Public Library your first stop. I guarantee no matter what time you arrive, something fun and spirited will be going on. If you have any questions regarding Story Time, please contact me at 564-7116 opt. 4.
