Hello!
My name is Brad Hruska (Mr. H) and since 2002 I have been the Youth Services Librarian for the Columbus Public Library (CPL). My primary role at the library is to get area youth excited about visiting the library and reading.
I also act as a reader's advisor for elementary students and their parents.
I am 100% dedicated to assisting you and your children so, if you have any questions regarding children's programing or juvenile literature, please stop in or you can contact me at (40) 564-7116 opt. 4 OR e-mail me at bhruska@columbusne.us.
CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS
The CPL offers a wide range of quality children’s programming throughout the year. These events are designed to show youth that the library is an awesome place to go and find great reading materials and resources.
The most common children’s programs offered are Story Time,
StoryART, and the infamous
Summer Reading Program.
StoryART: StoryArt follows very much the same format as Story Time; however, instead of having the children and their parents interact together using items found in the Learning Activity Chest, they are given the opportunity to go down to the Columbus Art Gallery (lower level of the library) an with Miss Susan and Miss Lisa to create some incredible art projects.
The projects are displayed in the Children’s Room and given back to the young artists at the next StoryART event.
OUTREACH
One of the many services provided by the CPL’s Children’s Department is outreach to area preschools, elementary schools, and daycare facilities. This service primarily consists of a half-hour theme-based story time complete with three story book readings, songs, poems, and visual aids.
If you are interested in having me come to your facility or classroom, please give me a call today!
ACCELERATED READER
CPL in cooperation with the Platte Valley Literacy Association is able to offer area students an alternative location for taking Accelerated Reader Tests. For information on taking AR quizzes at the library please browse the library’s AR Policy (Policy Link).

IMAGINATION LIBRARY
Thanks to Dolly Parton and the
Columbus Area United Way, young children have the opportunity to
receive one free picture book a month until the age of five. The
only requirement is that the child either lives in Columbus, NE.
or has at least one parent working within the city limits. If
you have a little one in your life who would be eligible from
this free program, take a moment and visit the Columbus Area
United Way website or click to print out the registration form:
Imagination Library Registration Form.
BOOK AWARDS
The world of Children’s Literature is packed with a wide range of honorable recognitions. Out of all of the many awards that are bestowed, it is coveted the
Caldecott Medal Award,
Newbery Medal Award, and
Dr. Seuss’ Geisel Award that are most sought after.
Individual states also have awards that are presented to the authors of some of the most exquisite children’s books, and the Corn Husker state is no exception with its highly recognized
Golden Sower Award.
GAMING WEBSITES
Children love computer games! Parents, however, need to make sure that the sites their kidoz are going to are safe. Here are some websites that are youth-friendly and fun! (coming soon!)
NEWSPAPER ARTICLES
Each month, I contribute an article to the Columbus Telegram. These editorials highlight various books and programs that are geared for children grades pre-k thru fifth grade. Take a gander at what topics have been discussed so far on the
Librarian's Shelf.
SUMMER READING PROGRAM
Each summer, Columbus Public Library hosts a Summer Reading Program.
