Reader's Advisor

Hi, I'm Sally Hansen and my job is to make certain that the Library has the books you want to read.

Book Selection: One of the best things I like about working at the Columbus Public Library is the time I have to read book reviews in the trade journals and to peruse the publishers' catalogs of soon-to-be-released books.

In selecting fiction titles for the Library, I not only rely upon my years in the book business and my knowledge of authors, but I also love to take recommendations from the public.  There's almost a 100% chance that if a library patron recommends a book, I will see that it is purchased.  I learned a long time ago that no one single person can keep up on all the new titles in each genre; so the recommendations I get are very valuable in filling in the gaps that develop in the collection.   You can either visit with me directly, or you can ask for one of the Library's "recommendation" forms.

Book Talks: Should you ever need a speaker for a half-hour presentation, I am available on a week's notice to talk about what's new in the fiction field. In order to make it more personal, I can tailor my talk to the particular interest of your organization.

Book Clubs:  Interest in reading and in literature is very evident in Columbus.  Currently, there are nine active book clubs in the city.  There's room for more discussion groups and as your "Reader's Advisor", I am eager to help individuals start new book clubs.

As always, I am available to advise all groups on the best books to discuss.  If given time, I can also help the individual club member find review sources.

Generally, the Library will not have enough copies of a particular book for each member of a book club. Rather than purchasing a personal copy, the book club member may choose to ask the Library staff to order a book through a service called "Inter-Library Loan".  This service is partially subsidized by the  Nebraska Library Commission, but this Library does pay a fee for each search and for each book ordered.

For a book club member who is ordering a copy of a book discussion book through Inter-Library Loan, the Library will absorb its electronic and personnel expenses but will charge the requestor the one-way postage cost for the book.  This charge is usually around $2.00 but the charge depends upon the weight of the item.

Listed below are the current book clubs.  Within each citation you will learn whether the club has an open membership, when it regularly meets and the name and phone number of the contact person.
