                                                           Meeting of the
                                                  Columbus Library Board
                                                               And the
                                      Platte County Library Advisory Board
                                                        December 9, 2004

The regularly scheduled quarterly meeting of the Columbus Library Board and the Platte County Library Advisory Board was called to order by the Vice-President, Jerry Jirka, at 4:30 PM on Thursday, December 9, 2004. Other members of the Library Board present were Jolaine Nielsen and Craig Neid, and Lynne Rambour. Members of the Platte County Library Advisory Board present were Carol Rosendahl, and Clayton Brunt. Karen Hake, the Bookmobile Librarian, and Robert Trautwein, Library Director, were also present. Carolyn Rohde had called earlier to ask to be excused.

Notice of this meeting was given in advance with a copy of the agenda posted at City Hall, the County Court House and in the Public Library. All proceedings hereafter shown were taken while the convened meeting was open to the public.

Mr. Jirka officially welcomed Mr. Neid to the Library Board.

The minutes of the October Board meeting were reviewed and allowed to stand as presented with a motion from Jolaine Nielsen and a second from Lynne Rambour. The motion passed by voice vote.

The Library Director distributed the November and December financial reports for the City Library, and the Columbus Library Foundation. Trautwein noted that it is third month of the city’s fiscal year. In reviewing the Foundation report, Trautwein noted that it was actually the November report. He had inadvertently printed that report instead of the December report. A motion was made by Lynne Rambour and seconded by Jolaine Nielsen to accept the City Library’s financial report. This motion passed by roll call vote: Jirka-aye, Nielsen-aye, Rambour-aye, and Neid-aye. Following the presentation of the financial report for the Platte County Library, a motion was made by Carol Rosendahl to accept that report This motion was seconded by Clayton Brunt and the motion passed by roll call vote: Jirka-aye, Rosendahl-aye, Neid-aye, Brunt-aye, Rambour-aye, and Nielsen-aye.

The Director reviewed his reports for October and November.

There were no committee reports.

Under Correspondence, Karen Hake, the Bookmobile Librarian, reported on her attendance at the national bookmobile conference in Columbus, Ohio. She said that there were three other Nebraska libraries—Sidney, Ogallala and Lincoln—represented at the conference.

Under Old Business, Trautwein reported that Larry Nagorski, the bookmobile driver, has given notice that he will retire in May, 2005, soon after school is out. Mrs. Hake explained that he wanted to stay with the vehicle until then to help her through the last days of school.
Trautwein said that Mr. Nagorski has asked to continue on in a part-time driver position.
Trautwein said that he hopes to hire a second part-time driver. He said that should the County refuse to increase the budget for county library service, it will be easier to manage the budget for county service with two part-time drivers.

Under New Business, the first item of business was the election of officers. Jerry Jirka volunteered to be the president for the coming year. Craig Neid volunteered to be the Vice-President and Lynne Rambour said that she would continue as the Treasurer. A motion was made by Jolaine Nielsen to accept the slate as presented. This motion was seconded by Lynne Rambour and the motion passed by roll call vote: Jirka-aye, Nielsen-aye, Rambour-aye, and Neid-aye.

Regarding the plans for the evaluation of the Library Director, Mr. Jirka said that he would be willing to work with Mr. Neid as a committee to review the evaluation of last year and the goals set by Mr. Trautwein for the 2005 year. He and Mr. Neid would then report back to the Library Board at the January meeting.

The last item of business was the recommendation from the Library Director that the Library be closed on Sunday December 26th and on Sunday, January 2nd. Trautwein explained that the City’s holiday policy requires that should a holiday fall on a Saturday, the city offices are closed the previous Friday. So, as in both Christmas and New Year’s Day, which falls on Saturdays, the Library will be closed both Friday and Saturday. Trautwein said that he is concerned that there will be few people in to use the Library on both Sunday December 26th and Sunday, January 2nd. He would like to see the building closed. Following a discussion, a motion was made by Jolaine Nielsen and seconded by Lynne Rambour that for this holiday season, the Library will be closed on Sunday, December 26, but it will be open on the Sunday following the New Years. This motion passed by voice vote.

There being no further business, the president called the meeting adjourned..

Respectfully submitted,

Robert Trautwein
Library Director
